The genius of Watchmen — the genre-changing comic classic — is usually ascribed to its brilliant writer, Alan Moore. Dave Gibbons, the dude who drew the pictures, paints a picture of inspired collaboration in Watching the Watchmen, this gorgeously designed behind-the-scenes chronicle. There’s no input from Moore due to beefs with Watchmen publisher DC Comics, but surprisingly, you don’t miss him. Gibbons capably carries the load, candidly dishing on Watchmen‘s origin and tricky production, embellishing anecdotes with sketches, correspondence, and page-by-page breakdowns. You realize there ?was more than one genius helming this masterpiece. A
