We gave it a B+

Now in his fifth decade as a one-man musical melting pot, Taj Mahal continues to resist the constraints of genre. And so the reggae rhythms of ”Never Let You Go” (a duet with daughter Deva) are provided by ukulele, trombone, and Latin workhorses Los Lobos, while the lilting African ballad ”Zanzibar” features the Malian kora player Toumani Diabate and vocals by Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo. What’s constant on Maestro is Taj’s 66-year-old voice — itself something of a tourist, not just in the way it tries on different accents and languages, but in the way it charmingly travels around pitches before it lands on a note.
