The Must List: March 21, 2008
1. RACHEL McADAMS in ‘Married Life’
Where have you been? After a two-year hiatus, the actress makes a graceful return as a woman so entrancing, she inspires a smitten married man to plot his wife’s murder.
2. SHAMELESS on Sundance Channel
This U.K. series about a loutish family from Manchester manages to be both heartwarming and obscene. And really, what else could you ask for from a TV show?
3. NIM CHIMPSKY, by Elizabeth Hess
We’re going unabashedly bananas (yeah, we said it) over Hess’ nonfiction account of a chimp raised by humans in the ’70s who learned to sign and do housework.
4. ”MERCY,” Duffy
This single from the latest British retro-soul sensation has got us tapping our toes to its groovy riffs and ”Stand by Me”-style bass line.
5. TOP CHEF: Chicago on Bravo
Season 4’s contestants include a New Zealander raised on a sheep farm and a cuisinier named…Spike? We don’t know what he cooks, but we’re rooting for him.
6. THE BANK JOB
Jason Statham scores one for the robbers in this gritty, politically charged heist thriller.
7. REAL EMOTIONAL TRASH, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks
The ex-Pavement frontman releases another winningly sarcastic album. If this counts as trash, we’d like some more.
8. LUSH LIFE, by Richard Price
Price’s soulful eighth novel about a wannabe poet’s murder may be the only whodunit we’ve ever read that actually gets better after the killer is revealed.
9. SNOW ANGELS
You can almost feel the chill in this moody small-town drama about a hapless couple (Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell) and the violence that engulfs them.
10. FREE RADIO
VH1’s improv series about a daft intern’s radio show makes even Jack Bauer (guest Kiefer Sutherland) chuckle.
