10-11 PM · NBC · Returns Sept. 25

As the ER ambulances screech into their final season, exec producer John Wells is preparing to…introduce a new major character! Angela Bassett will, he says, ”come in as the attending [physician] in the department, the position Laura Innes had for a long time as Weaver and that Paul McCrane had as Romano. She’s running the ER and is a tough taskmaster.” (There will be ”much butting of heads” between her and John Stamos.) As for the returning stars and the series finale: ”Noah Wyle has always been committed to be back, so he’s doing four episodes this season, and he was always what the final episode was gonna be about.” Sorry, folks — no mention of The Clooney showing up.
