Kath & Kim, the most-watched Australian TV series in 2007, is coming to America! Beloved SNL alum Molly Shannon and strident skinny jeans activist Selma Blair have signed on to play the dysfunctional mother (Kath) and daughter (Kim) — characters who were originally conceived by the actresses who play them, Jane Turner and Gina Riley. Kath is a bubbly divorcée who likes to keep trim, and Kim is hot-tempered, flaky, and grossly overestimates her worth to society. The only roadblock might be whether the show’s distinctly Australian tone can translate across the ocean. But who’s to say these two can’t make like The Office and spin it into something all their own?
OK, help… I’m daydreaming about how Selma’s character could be a precise hybrid between Mary Katherine Gallagher and Selma’s own Cecile Caldwell from Cruel Intentions. (“Secret… society… secret… society!”) No, this wouldn’t make any sense, but judging by some of the online clips of Kath & Kim (including a brief promo, below), it might not have to.
I’m just totally psyched that Molly Shannon gets a TV show. Now, if only someone could start writing actual scripts…
