We gave it a B+
Incubated by a black light and baptized in bong water, Black Mountain are trying hard to be a classic-rock band before their time. Songs like ”Wucan” and ”Stormy High” — with their fuzz-tone guitars, synths, and processional drums — have the creepy majesty of early Sabbath, while ”Evil Ways” beats a tribal path to the center of your mind. The main attraction of In the Future is ”Bright Lights,” a multipart suite with loping power chords and lyrics possibly about communion with el diablo himself. It’s heavy and appealingly dopey in equal measure.
