We gave it a C+

On tour, The Color Purple remains a critic-vexing crowd-pleaser, breezing through incest and beatings to get to the next bout of musical uplift. The best reason to check in is Felicia P. Fields, reprising her Tony-nominated take on Sofia (originated on film by show producer Oprah) as a raunchy, man-battering, ”Hell no!”-spouting Winfrey-zilla. Minor stunt casting comes via Idol vet La Toya London, beaming almost too brightly as missionary sister Nettie, and Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams, whose supposedly voracious diva, Shug, seems more asexual than bisexual.
