We gave it a C
Is Steel Train’s emo stripped of frenzy and histrionics — or is it simply oldfangled, heart-on-sleeve folk rock with a snappy beat? One thing’s clear: This New York City band’s second full-length album, Trampoline, is so relentlessly sincere and introspective that it’s downright enervating. Things kick off with a misty-eyed 9/11 song and get progressively dire — think Barenaked Ladies in full navel-gazing mode, or Crash Test Dummies at their glummest. Hmmm, could these Steel Train guys be Canadians in disguise?
