World Without End

Posted on

Like The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett’s 1989 novel about building a Gothic cathedral in an English town, World Without End focuses on a medieval architect battling priests. Set in the same burg two centuries later, this 1,000-page saga of political and religious intrigue is no retread. He weaves plague-stricken villages, Machiavellian monks, and 14th-century cloth-dyeing into the romance between architect Merthin and Caris, a reluctant nun. Though the characters are occasionally thin, this wonderful sequel should leave you, like Caris, with a ”deep contentment?like twilight on a summer evening.” A-
