On Annie Lennox’s fourth solo LP, Songs of Mass Destruction, the former Eurythmic’s sweet dreams are now made of this: self-actualization, world peace, and the global equality of womankind. Songs’ message even culminates in a Lady Live Aid of sorts, with Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dion, and Faith Hill guesting on the up-with-people screed ”Sing.” While the aim is irreproachable, and Lennox’s inimitable voice — all dark-chocolate rasp and throaty power — remains undiminished, listening to the album too frequently feels like eating your veggies.
