We gave it a B+
In the three years since Steve Earle’s last studio disc, he’s married country songbird Allison Moorer and ditched Nashville for NYC. The fresh start suits him: Washington Square Serenade is awash in unexpected grace notes. Brazilian neo-folksters Forro in the Dark provide the harmonies ”All of us are immigrants” (take that, Lou Dobbs!) in ”City of Immigrants.” Hip-hop rhythms bubble up in ”Satellite Radio.” And ”Way Down in the Hole” — the theme song for The Wire — simmers with foreboding. But mostly this is a love letter to his new home.
