Box Office: 'Resident Evil: Extinction' Thrives

Posted on

The final weekend box office numbers are in and Resident Evil: Extinction remains the big winner, despite totaling $300,000 less than Sony’s early figures indicated. Over-reporting seems to be contagious. Both Good Luck Chuck and Sydney White came in a tad under their initial digits, too. But thanks to strong Sunday showings, several smaller releases improved on their mid-weekend guesstimates — the per-theater take for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was $29,562, while Into the Wild wound up averaging $53,110 in four locations. That’s the 38th-best opening average of all time.

Here’s the final top 10:

1. Resident Evil: Extinction / $23.7 mil weekend / $23.7 mil cume

2. Good Luck Chuck / $13.7 mil / $13.7 mil

3. The Brave One / $7.3 mil / $25.0 mil

4. 3:10 to Yuma / $6.2 mil / $37.7 mil

5. Eastern Promises / $5.6 mil / $6.4 mil

8. Superbad / $3.1 mil / $116.2 mil

9. The Bourne Ultimatum / $2.9 mil / $220.2 mil
