Almost 11 years ago — back in October 1996 — I read a phrase in Entertainment Weekly that, for reasons I don’t understand, has always stayed stuck in my brain. Back then, Bruce Fretts was writing “The Week” in the TV review section, and he started off his paragraph on The Drew Carey Show with “Thanks in large part to the star’s galumphing charm…”

I stopped right there. I had no idea what “galumphing charm” was (until I went here), yet at the same time it sounded perfect. Ever since, whenever I think of Drew Carey, I think of his galumphing charm. And I was interested to hear Carey (pictured yesterday at the TV critics’ summer conclave in L.A.) might be bringing that galumphing charm to The Price is Right, which is talking to him about taking over for Bob Barker.

Big shoes to fill, sure. Does the man have what it takes? Or are you bummed for Rosie O’Donnell, since it looks like she isn’t getting her dream gig?
