We gave it a B-

Everything about this political satire promises blue-state wish fulfillment. There’s the title, the subject matter, and the president on the cover who even resembles our Commander-in-Chief. And if you squint, the guy with a knife in his hand looks a little like Al Gore. But the marketing is at odds with what’s inside: Scheming Democratic VP Godwin Pope brings down his boss through a Clintonesque political scandal. In other times, a Carl Hiaasen-style take on Washington’s greed and power lust might have been appropriate, but in the current climate of deadly serious policy disasters, Jamie Malanowski’s The Coup reads like a wink-wink, nudge-nudge e-mail from 1998. B-
