By focusing on Grindhouse‘s opening weekend, ”The Blues Brothers” (News & Notes) took a narrow approach and failed to depict a complete picture of the Weinstein Co.’s success. For example, a $24 million opening weekend for TMNT, which we made with Warner Bros. for only $27 million and is expected to gross over $100 million worldwide, is not a ”misfire.” In addition, shortly after your story ran, it was announced that three of our upcoming films will premiere in the official selection of the Cannes film festival — hardly the sign of a ”grab bag” slate.
While we will never turn down the opportunity to create a daring project like Grindhouse, with established and creative filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, we kept a responsible eye on the budget, covered all our costs on the film by preselling the foreign rights, and always planned to release the films separately on DVD and TV.
It was also disconcerting that you relied on anonymous sources instead of an on-the-record statement that was provided to you by producer Richard Gladstein to explain the distribution strategy behind The Nanny Diaries. Had Gladstein’s quote been included, it would have been clear that ”we all felt September gave us the best opportunity…[to] reach the broadest audience” and had nothing to do with the unsubstantiated rumors your anonymous source pointed to.

I take offense at your list of the Five Worst Songs to Listen to While Getting It On (The Glutton). I’ve actually done well with the ladies with ”Weird Al” Yankovic. Actually, with just one lady — but she ended up marrying me.

I laughed heartily at Dalton Ross’ piece about sci-fi geekdom. It’s always nice to know that there are other people dressing up like Gamorrean guards on Halloween. But I am resolved to go to the gym this year, so should I encounter any nonsense I’ll at least be able to walk quickly for a bit before being pummeled by the cool kids.
”Lost in Transition” (News & Notes) provided some much-needed insight into what is going on with the show. I am relieved that Nikki and Paulo won’t be scratching their way out of the sand anytime soon, but the producers still missed the mark by devoting an episode to offing them. Why not let the pair disappear as abruptly as they appeared? I would have been happier if we just never heard from them again.
