Inherit the Wind, the 1955 chestnut based on the Scopes ”monkey trial,” is the kind of broad pop-history play that’s best viewed with a pack of seventh graders, followed by earnest discussion afterward. Still timely — and still syrupy — today, the show always lives or dies by the actors squaring off over Darwin in the courtroom. This round is redeemed by Christopher Plummer, effortlessly crowd-pleasing as the floppy-haired, red-faced Drummond, who sticks up for ”the individual human mind” while snapping his suspenders and giggling at his own jokes.
