There are many mysteries in Simple Genius, David Baldacci’s new book starring Secret Service agents-turned-PIs Michelle Maxwell and Sean King. Was the death of a scientist assigned to Babbage Town — a compound for geniuses working on world-changing math problems — murder or suicide? Why was he found at a CIA facility? And what really happened in Maxwell’s childhood that causes her to check into a mental hospital? It’s that last question, which prompts a ”deep” psychological look into a familiar character, that marks the biggest departure from Baldacci’s usual potboiler plot. But it’s a shallow, predictable peek that doesn’t take a genius to figure out.
