Ledger and Cornish have bounteous chemistry as a junkie couple in this restrained but moving adaptation of Luke Davies’ novel, Candy — so much, in fact, that the film’s insistence that they’re bad for each other doesn’t sit well.
EXTRAS In a commentary, we learn a post-wedding scene was created to explain the disappearance of Rush’s dissolute mentor character (he left to shoot the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels). In a making-of, Ledger says this is ”not a story about heroin”; producer Margaret Fink, meanwhile, says it’s about ”a hero, a heroine, and heroin.” B
