Now that the Libby verdict's in, let's cast the movie!

Posted on

Madsen_lThe verdict is in, and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney’s ex-chief of staff, was convicted today of lying to the FBI and a grand jury in the Valerie Plame CIA leak investigation. Libby is expected to appeal, but this turn of events does add a juicy new element to last week’s report that Warner Bros. is developing a movie based on the lives of Plame, the unceremoniously exposed spook, and her husband, former diplomat Joseph C. Wilson IV. (There’s also an insta-book coming out next month, based on the trial transcripts.)

And here’s where we come in, PopWatchers: This real-world thriller needs a cast! We’re already thinking of getting Virginia Madsen (pictured, right) to play her deep-cover doppelganger, Plame (left) — but what of the rest? Here’s where our mind is:

Libby: Richard Dreyfuss
Wilson: Michael Douglas
Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald: John Cusack
Cheney: Mikhail Gorbachev (in his English-language movie debut!)
State Department leaker Richard Armitage: Unless Rod Steiger is resurrected, we’ll go with James Tolkan, who played the principal in the Back to the Future movies
Journalist Robert Novak, the journalist who published the leak: Gilbert Gottfried

And there’s more: Who should play NBC’s Meet the Press host Tim Russert (the most damaging witness against Libby)? Or top White House adviser Karl Rove? Your suggestions: Bring ’em on!
