Ten Things We Love This Week

The Must List: January 26, 2007

MOVIE
1. TV 2007
We are loving the new seasons of American Idol and Rome. And we welcome the return of 24, Heroes, Prison Break, and Battlestar Galactica. Good things do come in small (and big) boxes.

DVD
2. L’ULTIMO BACIO
Recently remade as The Last Kiss, the 2001 Italian original (a romantic dramedy spanning generations) sparkles with wit and humanity.

BOOK
3. SMOOTH OPERATORS, by Richard Jarman
A grim (but hilarious) catalog of the fashions and hairstyles that defined the American male of the ’70s and ’80s. May God have mercy on their leisure-suited souls.

TV
4. OLD SPICE COMMERCIAL
A comic (or cosmic?) collision involving Bruce Campbell, a brilliant script, and a painting of a very big ship. (Watch it here)

TV
5. MAN VS. WILD
Watch the improbably named Bear Grylls try to survive in the world’s most dangerous wildernesses. Our money is on the man. (Discovery Channel)

MUSIC
6. ”QUÉ HICISTE,” Jennifer Lopez
The muy caliente single from J. Lo’s upcoming Spanish-language album.

DVD
7. CRANK
Jason Statham plays a hitman poisoned by a concoction that allows him not a moment’s rest in a noisy action thriller that giddily splashes about in a puddle of testosterone.

BOOK
8. THE TERROR, by Dan Simmons
In his chilling tale (inspired by a real-life mystery), Simmons deftly adds modern horror to a gripping story of an 1845 Arctic expedition gone awry.

MUSIC
9. ”NORTH AMERICAN SCUM,” LCD Soundsystem
Great lyrics and some insanely infectious beats fuel this mini-masterpiece of pseudo-apologetic self-absorption. (Check it out online)

MOVIE
10. THE PAINTED VEIL
Naomi Watts and Edward Norton star in this handsome adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s 1925 novel about love in the time of cholera.
