Meryl Streep in an ABBA musical. How’s that for a sentence you never expected to hear? But you haven’t read wrong: The two-time Oscar-winner has indeed signed up to star as promiscuous mama Donna Sheridan in a film version of the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia!, to be directed by the show’s director, Phyllida Lloyd. (Among the producers: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.) Streep would play an overalls-happy mom who must figure out which of her three exes fathered her daughter after said daughter announces she’s getting married and has invited all three men to the wedding. Much singing and dancing in scuba gear ensue.
While theater and cinema purists may scoff, I think it’s ahilarious idea. After the success (and possible Oscar nom…) of The Devil Wears Prada, Streep surely knows how to be cannily commercial while still giving a good performance. Plus, as she demonstrated in Postcards on the Edge and A Prairie Home Companion, the woman can sing. And if she wants to do it in a shiny lamé ABBA spacesuit, who’s to judge?
What say you, PopWatchers? Is Streep crazy… or crazy like a fox?And who do you think should be cast as the daughter and the three would-bedads?
