We gave it a B-

In veteran mystery writer Tony Hillerman’s latest Joe Leaphorn novel, the retired and rather bored ex-Navajo tribal police officer rushes to investigate the disappearance of an old acquaintance. Well, perhaps ”rushes” isn’t quite the right word for it, or for anything else in The Shape Shifter. Hillerman’s tale of an ancient rug and a killer believed to be long dead is nicely colored with background about Native American mythology, but his plot is a tad on the slow side. Indeed, the author often seems less interested in placing Leaphorn in danger than in some place where his hero can drink yet another cup of coffee.
