We gave it an A-
Late last year, Columbia Records showed this subversive songwriter the door after she reportedly refused to trim down the 23 tracks she’d submitted as her second CD. Their loss, our gain: Pretty Little Head, released at last on Nellie McKay’s own label, has enough provocative ideas and appealing melodies for three. Carried along by her jazzy piano and agile voice, the politically outraged pop songs are more than mere propaganda. Not every moment is essential, but compromise just isn’t part of McKay’s dazzling, defiant repertoire.
