Kids with famous parents vie for recording careers
The entertainment world has a long history of family dynasties (the Judds, the Fondas, the Coppolas), and today’s music industry is no exception. Here’s a look at the latest crop.
Famous Folks Growing Pains’ Alan Thicke and singer-actress Gloria Loring (she sang The Facts of Life theme). Current Project The Evolution of Robin Thicke (Interscope), a smooth set of R&B loverman jams featuring guests like Pharrell and Lil’ Wayne. The jazzy, horn-filled ”Everything I Can’t Have” is a highlight. Would Dad Dig It? Probably not. Alan wrote or co-wrote the songs for The Facts of Life, Diff’rent Strokes, and Wheel of Fortune. Robin’s more on the Timberlake tip. B
Famous Folks Wrestling demigod Hulk Hogan and his wife, Hogan Knows Best costar Linda Hogan. Current Project On her radio-friendly debut, Undiscovered (SoBe), Brooke doesn’t mess around, enlisting überproducer Scott Storch and hip-hop star Paul Wall (on the single ”About Us”). Lightweight, yeah, but definitely catchy. And we’re not just saying that because her pops told us to. Would Dad Dig It? He might. Like the Hulkster, Brooke is a populist; this is music for the masses. B
Famous Folks John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Current Project His first album in eight years, Friendly Fire (Capitol), released with a Moulin Rouge — meets — Blue Velvet music-video DVD. From first track ”Dead Meat,” Fire passes in an enchanting sort of basement-cabaret haze, all pretty melodies and haunting orchestral arrangements. Would Dad Dig It? While it probably won’t score Sean a gig at Shea Stadium, it does merit the description ”Lennonesque.” Papa would be proud. A-
ALEXA RAY JOEL
Famous Folks Billy Joel and former supermodel/Uptown Girl Christie Brinkley. Current Project The piano-based Sketches EP (available on iTunes). Her writing is solid, and her overly bright voice would be ideal if she were belting out show tunes. But she isn’t, and less-sweet vocals might make her midtempo ballads resonate more. Would Dad Dig It? For sure. So far, she’s hewing pretty faithfully to the Piano Man’s oeuvre. Maybe too faithfully? B
