For Stewart, the road to late-career riches lies in never recording fresh material again. Having massacred the likes of Cole Porter through four albums of pre-rock standards, he’s moved on to ’60s/’70s/ ’80s ballad karaoke with Still the Same… Great Rock Classics of Our Time. It helps, slightly, that he favors covering singers who were on the raspy side themselves, from Seger and Henley to Bonnie Tyler. But this return to ”rock” notably lacks any actual rockers, which might’ve been harder to phone in than all the midtempo complaisance.
