We gave it a B+
In 2004, writer-performers Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen gave themselves three weeks to pen an original piece for a musical-theater festival. The result? [title of show], a show about creating [show], which recycles brainstorm-session chatter as ”dialogue” and works the casting of actor-singer pals Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff into the ”plot.” What make [show] more than gimmicky fluff are Bell and Bowen’s sly, sassy songs bemoaning the creative process. While musicals about making musicals are nothing new (42nd Street; Kiss Me, Kate), the meta angle is an inspired spin.
