Who can track Jack Bauer so precisely that it puts the folks at CTU to shame? For Anne Melville, script supervisor of Fox’s 24 (season finale, May 22, at 8 p.m.), it’s all in a day’s work. Here are a few of the continuity threads she has to monitor.

HANDS-FREE BRUTE
”There’s no way Jack [Kiefer Sutherland] could be on his cell phone and smack a person around with a gun,” says Melville, though 24’s scripts often call for just that. ”So he’s got to be on comm [his earpiece]. I backtrack in the script and figure out when he can put that on.”

JAGGED LITTLE PILLS
The latest hurdle is following First Lady Martha’s (Jean Smart) mental instability and pill intake. ”She has to let them work and calm her down,” Melville says, before the script can prescribe another dose.

THE HUMAN STAIN
”Blood is a biggie, and wounds are a biggie,” Melville explains. If, say, Audrey (Kim Raver) bleeds on her top, she has to remain soiled until Melville finds time for her to change. ”Not until she is back at CTU [could] she put on different clothes.”
