We gave it an A-

Fully recovered from a near-fatal bout with hepatitis C, Alejandro Escovedo returns with the triumphant The Boxing Mirror, that owes an unmistakable debt to Lou Reed’s noirish 1978 rock operetta Street Hassle. Aptly, it’s produced by Reed’s ex-Velvet Underground associate John Cale, the perfect choice for an artist concerned with themes of mortality, spiritual yearning, and redemption (not to mention the occasional cathartic imperative to rock out). Here’s hoping someone outside of Escovedo’s Austin hometown is paying attention.
