”The Great Bellyache” of 1925, which sidelined Ruth for six weeks, was believed by many to be an STD.
Montville fails to penetrate the haze surrounding Ruth’s obscure beginnings as the (biracial?) product of a Baltimore orphanage, but his rehashing of the legend is at least a fascinating snapshot of the era.
