Which movie has the best chance of surviving life on TV?
Despite flops like Clueless and My Big Fat Greek Life, hit movies continue to be spun off into television shows such as the upcoming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Which movie, current or classic, do you think would have the best chance of surviving life on TV? —C.J. Arellano
To work as a TV series, a movie has to have characters you want to see each week — an obvious point, but one often overlooked (I loved Clueless as a movie, but craved no regular update on Cher’s wacky exploits). So what about a series based on the classic 1930s and ’40s Thin Man movies: A daffy, manor-born woman falls for a street-smart detective (giving our series an opposites-attract, Sam-and-Diane Cheers vibe); the wealthy couple banter, booze and wisecrack their way through myriad mysteries (reviving the Hart to Hart dynamic). Pretty people, oddball crooks, lovely locales and snappy dialogue — now if we could just cast it properly. I’d start with Tea Leoni as the tipsy, game missus.
