We gave it a C+
It takes superhuman levels of concentration, but by ignoring the lyrics, one can appreciate Scott Stapp’s solo debut The Great Divide for what it is: solidly built post-grunge for chest beating, fist-pumping, and beery sing-alongs. Stapp’s new backup band is tighter than Creed was, ripping through thundering prog-metal with slick virtuosity (”Reach Out” and ”Fight Song”). And Stapp certainly knows how to craft a ham-handed stadium anthem (the title tune). That said, is there a more self-important rocker out there? His Hallmark card clichés and dull portentousness weigh down every track.
