Tender Buttons

Posted on

Pared down to just a pair, British psych-synth throwbacks Broadcast get minimal on Tender Buttons, their third album. Trish Keenan’s vocals are as dreamy as ever, but her band’s past dense instrumentation is scaled back — live drums are replaced by sputtering mechanized beats, while most songs sound as if they’re based on tinny ’80s Nintendo noises. The new approach clicks on tracks like the call-girl ode ”Goodbye Girls,” but overall, the depleted group’s signal is weakened.
