I wasn’t really looking forward to MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday; last year’s show was the sleepiest yet, and this year’s, hosted by non-comedian Diddy, didn’t promise to be any livelier. But now that R. Kelly is going to perform, I may change my mind. The singer, who, as MTV News points out, is the only performer who’ll need a judge’s permission to appear at the Miami event, could single-handedly invigorate the show with his sheer shamelessness. A 15-minute live-action re-enactment of ”Trapped in the Closet” is probably too much to hope for, but even a chapter or two would provide the jaw-dropping spectacle the VMAs have strained to provide in recent years (like the Britney-Madonna-Xtina liplock).

Mr. Kelly, do your worst.
