If you’ve ever blasted the Beatles ”Here Comes the Sun” with your windows rolled down, or shaken your groove thing to Donna Summer’s pulsating ”I Feel Love,” then please join me in a moment of silence for Robert Moog, creator of the Moog synthesizer, the instrument that added juicy sonic layers to those and countless other hits. Moog died of brain cancer yesterday at 71, and while he spent much of his career recognized only in music-geek circles, it’s nice that he scored more widespread notoriety in his final few years, including a fascinating feature in Entertainment Weekly published last fall, along with a list of the five best (and worst) Moog songs.
