We gave it a B
In his sequel to 2004’s Crossing California, Adam Langer again weaves a dense tale (it has a glossary!) about a group of friends and their respective families in ’80s-era Chicago in The Washington Story. Film buff Muley and best friend Jill are literally growing apart as their high school years wind down and college beckons. While the story has some sweet, cinema-ready moments (Muley builds an igloo for a heart-to-heart with Jill), it’s a tad too crammed with details. Langer’s ambition and skill at creating a whole world are admirable. But it feels a bit much for something that reads like an epic Dawson’s Creek episode.
