We gave it a B
With Dave Friddman at the helm, these upstarts from upstate New York are apt to imitate the dreamy rock of their producer’s elder clients (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips), but there is. . .well, hope. Frontman Jason Russo annoyingly apes Wayne Coyne’s cutesy croon over meandering pianos on ”Synthetic Symphony.” But when Hopewell add some hangover-hazy honky-tonk grit to their spacey sprawl (”The Notbirds,” closer ”Square Peg Teeth”), the results are uniquely out of this world on Hopewell & the Birds of Appetite.
