JOHNNY CASH

The Legend (Columbia/Legacy )

JUNE CARTER CASH

Keep on the Sunny Side: Her Life in Music (Columbia/Legacy)

It’s not as if Columbia has ever passed up an opportunity to anthologize Cash; ”The One on the Right Is on the Left” could apply to interchangeable best-ofs already on your shelf. But Legend‘s four discs represent the most inclusive one so far; Cash’s ’80s Mercury tenure is folded in, even if Rick Rubin still ain’t lending Johnny’s end-time material. (There’s even better bait in a deluxe version due Aug. 16, with bonus DVD and live disc.) The real news is June’s first serious anthology. Before becoming an earth mama and muse, Carter was a faux-hick comedian, and her earliest singles include plenty of Minnie-esque pearls, like a hilarious version of ”Baby, It’s Cold Outside” that’s refashioned into chillbilly music. Both: AChris Willman
