Forget the sparkling indie songs of mixes past. This lull-worthy set is better suited to income-tax filing than to Newport Beach’s calamities. Still, it’s nearly saved by the bell: heart melter Bell X1’s ”Eve, the Apple of My Eye,” that is. C

No stranger to charitable causes, Nelson gathers a stellar group of friends — including Patty Griffin and the Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines — to help with his latest effort. And while their intentions are certainly unassailable, we’re happy to report that this live concert recording is too. A-
