How many times can a movie franchise go back to the same well? In the case of The Ring, at least twice. Naomi Watts’ chiller The Ring Two opened with $36 million, according to studio estimates, scaring up more than twice the $15 million opening of 2002’s The Ring. (That film ultimately grossed $129 million.) Meanwhile, the weekend’s other major new release, Disney’s Ice Princess, barely skated to a fourth-place opening, with $7 million.

Princess may have been on thin ice because it opened in a market that already had two strong family films. Last week’s champ, Robots, earned another $21.8 million to finish in second place, while No.3 film The Pacifier took in $12.5 million in its third week. Rounding out the top five was Will Smith’s Hitch, which charmed another $6.6 million from moviegoers’ wallets.
