Dave Karger sizes up the Best Director race
Predicted Winner Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby
Possible Upsets Martin Scorsese, The Aviator
No Way Alexander Payne, Sideways; Taylor Hackford, Ray; Mike Leigh, Vera Drake
My hunch is that this is the one main category causing the Academy the most agita. One the one hand, you have Scorsese, who?s never won on four previous nominations. But will voters want The Aviator to be the movie for which he wins the Oscar? Then there?s Eastwood, who already has a directing trophy on his shelf (for Unforgiven) and oversaw a more modest production in comparison to The Aviator. But his work with his cast cannot be ignored, and the guy also starred in the film, produced it, and wrote the score. The Academy loves Clint, and a second directing Oscar could prove it.
