It’s hard to find love on reality TV; just ask Meredith Phillips, who’s now had two televised quests for romance go south. She and Ian McKee, who became engaged at the climax of last year’s edition of ABC’s The Bachelorette, have now called it quits, TV’s Extra! reports. In a statement, the couple suggested that the decision to break it off was mutual. ”Our relationship began with great expectations for a happy ending, but unfortunately things didn’t work out as we had hoped,” they said. ”What we experienced together was incredible and we are both sad to see it end. We thank you for your support.”
Phillips, 31, landed the starring role on last year’s show after making it to the final four on The Bachelor, only to be rejected by Bob Guiney. Her season ended last February with McKee, 30, popping the question. He left his New York job in equity-research sales to move in with his fiancée, a make-up artist and model, in Marina del Rey, Calif. It’s not clear why they ended their engagement, though Bachelorette co-executive producer Lisa Levenson suggested that McKee was reluctant to see his romance play out on TV. ”From day one, he said he could never see himself proposing to a woman on national television or saying the words ‘I love you,”’ Levenson told People.
Maybe McKee didn’t want to turn his wedding into an extravagant, televised pageant like that of former Bachelorette Trista Rehn and her pick, Ryan Sutter. Still, Rehn and Sutter’s is the only relationship in the history of the Bachelor and Bachelorette franchise that has lasted all the way to the altar.
