Politics makes for strange bedfellows. And there was no better proof than the nominees for the 25th annual Razzie Awards, which lumped President George W. Bush, the Olsen Twins, a pair of Wayans Brothers, and Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry among the nominees for the year’s worst film performances.
Bush got a Razzie nod for Worst Actor, based on his screen time in Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. He’ll compete with Vin Diesel (The Chronicles of Riddick), Colin Farrell (Alexander), Ben Affleck (Jersey Girl and Surviving Christmas), and Ben Stiller, whose work was (dis)honored in a whopping five films — Along Came Polly, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Dodgeball, Envy, and Starsky & Hutch.
Razzies founder John Wilson told the Associated Press that although the President appeared in a documentary, he earned his nomination — along with fellow Fahrenheit 9/11 subjects Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and Britney Spears — not on account of Moore’s editing. ”It’s the raw footage of these people just making fools of themselves,” he said.
Meanwhile, both Jolie and Berry have a chance to bookend an Oscar with a Razzie. Jolie earned her nomination for Worst Actress in Alexander and Taking Lives, while Berry’s chances come down to only one maligned film, Catwoman. They’ll face a big group of challengers, including New York Minute‘s twin terrors Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen; brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans, who played most of their White Chicks in drag; and Hilary Duff, recognized for her work in A Cinderella Story and Raise Your Voice.
The night’s big honor — Worst Film — will go to one of the following: Catwoman, Alexander, Surviving Christmas, White Chicks, or Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2. Catwoman is the early frontrunner, leading the way with seven nominations, but Alexander is close behind with six.
Razzies will be dropped on unsuspecting winners Feb. 26, one day before the Oscars. A full list of nominees can be found at razzies.com.
