After seven albums of somber Neil Young-esque weepers, indie darling Jason Molina retired his Songs: Ohia outfit for a more robust band-oriented project with which to channel his inner Crazy Horse. Composed largely of the same backing personnel, MEC bombard the listener with wondrous guitar sprawls to match Molina’s soulful drawl on 10 epic tracks (the shortest song clocks in at 5:50). Trial & Errors — a live recording from a show the group did in Brussels in 2003 — not only draws from Ohia’s back catalog but also showcases three tracks from MEC’s studio debut, due in spring. Among those slated for the studio treatment is standout ”The Dark Don’t Hide It,” where the virtuoso interplay between Molina and guitarist Jason Groth erupts into a frenzy of twangy trills and honky-tonk thrills.
