The Grudge

Sarah Michelle Gellar held off all comers at the box office this weekend, as her horror thriller The Grudge made it two weeks in the No. 1 spot.

Thanks to Halloween, The Grudge slipped only 43 percent in its second weekend to $22.4 million, according to studio estimates, a much smaller decline than most horror films see. After 10 days, The Grudge has grossed an impressive $71.3 million.

The Oscar-buzz biopic Ray placed second with a strong $20.1 million debut, thanks to a mountain of press on star Jamie Foxx. Meanwhile, the new gorefest Saw settled for No. 3 with a better-than-expected $17.4 million.

Shark Tale and Shall We Dance? held on decently to round out the top five, with $8 million and $6.3 million, respectively, while Nicole Kidman’s controversial new drama Birth, which opened in fewer than 500 theaters, earned a disastrous $1.7 million, good enough only for 11th place. Don’t expect Kidman to do any bathtub scenes with a 10-year-old boy anytime soon.
