How releasing shows on DVD affects ratings

Don’t you think that releasing shows on DVD soon after they air might hurt their ratings? For example, I don’t bother watching 24 because I know it will be out on DVD within six months. –Seth Mathews
Seth, the producers of 24 all just had simultaneous heart attacks. You’re right…to an extent. I notice this trend — my daughters used to rent early seasons of Sex and the City on DVD and skip the new episodes. So yes, ratings can suffer. But most viewers still want to talk to their pals about what they all watched last night, so for now, the TV universe isn’t in grave peril.
