K’wan follows the underground success of Gangsta with his newest street tale, in which star-crossed lovers Rio and Trinity strive to escape the projects in Harlem. Rio, living with his drunkard mom and straining against pressure to pick up a drug lord’s mantle, wants ”a decent li’l gig and a crib of my own” — but fate has a different plan. K’wan steadily builds to a frantic, movie-worthy climax in which respect for life takes a backseat to money, pride, and love. The slang-heavy dialogue in Street Dreams may take a chapter or two to get into, but the characters become so alive that watching them spin toward their inevitable ends is heartbreaking.
