We gave it an A-
In a soft, diffident tone, Ireland’s Simple Kid (singer-songwriter Ciaran McFeely) murmurs intentionally banal observations like ”love’s an enigma” on 1. Meanwhile, he deploys raw riffs and beats that are alternately jittery and shuffling. His conceptual triumph is ”The Average Man,” an unironic ode to ordinariness sung to strummed guitar with the vehemence of a young Ray Davies. But neither as Kinks-y nor as simple as his music asserts, McFeely is a shrewd charmer, often hardheaded and occasionally hard-hearted.
