Andy Dick: Bob D'Amico

Attention, celebrities: Just because you’re in the VIP area at a rock festival doesn’t mean you can spark up with abandon. Just ask Andy Dick, who was arrested May 2 at the Coachella alt-rock fest in Indio, Calif., according to The Smoking Gun. Indio Police Officer Benjamin Guitron told the website that a security guard spotted the 38-year-old comic actor lighting a joint backstage, detained him, discovered a baggie containing less than an ounce of pot, and handed him over to the cops on duty at the show. They took his VIP wristband and booted him from the concert grounds. He’ll have to return to Riverside County for a court date on June 16 to answer a misdemeanor possession charge, the officer said.

Dick, who is starring this summer in ”The Assistant,” an MTV series that spoofs ”The Apprentice,” has a long history of battling addictions, though he’d reportedly been clean since 1999. After his NewsRadio costar Phil Hartman was killed in 1998, he took refuge in substance abuse, he told EW in a 2001 interview. ”I was drinking beer like water,” he recalled. ”I’d wake up, smoke pot, and never stop smoking pot all day.” In 1999, after wrapping his car around a pole, he was charged with DUI and cocaine and pot possession, which led him to what he said was his final stint in rehab. ”I needed a strong hand of discipline. And I had the strong hand of the law pretty much shoved up my a–.” Asked to comment on the performer’s Coachella arrest, Dick’s manager did not return EW.com’s call by press time.
