Do song lyrics REALLY matter? Talk about it
Do song lyrics really matter, or is the feeling conveyed by the music and vocals enough to make you love a tune? In their contentious debate about rock and pop lyrics, Entertainment Weekly’s Rob Brunner and Chris Willman battled over tunes from the ’60s to the present.
So now we want to know what you think. Is it fair to compare lyrics from the singer-songwriter era of the ’60s to, say, OutKast’s ”Hey Ya”? Can a song’s merit be determined from a few lines in a chorus, or must the words be taken as a whole? Share your thoughts here — and tell us which songs you find particularly moving or terrible.
