We gave it a B+
Country singers tend to be terse, but McMurtry writes verbose, character-rich yarns. That’s no surprise coming from the son of writer Larry McMurtry. The younger scribe’s latest CD, cut live, allows stragglers to catch up with his rich catalog. McMurtry’s voice may be more wobbly than Lou Reed’s, but his erudite guitar work fills out the melody, and there’s plenty of excitement in his densely withering portraits and wry asides.
